The Selection of Honorary Student 2017: a Tool to Develop Scientific Thinking and Competency amongst College Students

Last month, Institut Teknologi Bandung held internal competition for outstanding student. The selection of honorary student is yearly competition organized by National Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia to develop scientific thinking and competency among Indonesia college students in order to give good impacts to society. Undergraduate Programme of Microbiology, as part of Institut Teknologi Bandung also participate in the selection process. After going through paper/document selection and interview, Undergraduate Programme of Microbiology selected Haniswita, a 3rd year student as its representative for selection at faculty level.

Selection at level of study program starts with document selection. In this stage, at least five students participated to enter the competition. Selection progresses with interview by several lecturers. Students were asked about their activities inside and outside campus, competitions they have participated, their daily life, and motivation in entering the selection. Some questions were asked in English to examine their fluency in English. In faculty level, selection was focused on presentation and discussion. In this level, Haniswita proposed research regarding modern shrimp cultivation system in Subang, West Java. In faculty level, Haniswita secured runner up position.

The girl who was born in Malang, 21 years ago participated in the competition to further develop scientific thinking and soft skill, as a important skill in society development. To the graduate of MAN 2 Payakumbuh, this selection facilitate her in contributing to her hometown, Payakumbuh. The selection process provided a benchmark for her abilities, potencies, and thoughts that she developed during her time as student in Institut Teknologi Bandung. She hopes that this competition also provide her with feedback regarding efficacy of her effort to develop and self-actualize during three years in ITB.
