In addition to the courses in class, ITB’s microbiology students have annual program that has been held since 2006, excursion. On 9th ‘til 16th of November 2010, Microbiology students class 2008 held some visits to some companies and institutes in Singapore. The excursion held by them was meant to give the students knowledge and insight on the development of microbiology in the country, the career prospects of microbiologists after they finish their studies, and to motivate the students to improve microbiology field in Indonesia. Here are some companies and institutes that were visited by Microbiology students class 2008 on their excursion in the Lion City.
Institute of environmental Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University
IESE is an institute owned by the Singaporean government whose work is focused on clean water management and sustainable energy development. At that time, IESE was conducting a research on the filtering ability of a membrane that would be used in NEWater and a research on the optimization of bioethanol as a source of alternative energy. Aside from the two projects mentioned above, at that time, IESE also conducted researches on the field of marine science and environmental-related biotechnology.
Genome institute is an institute that works’ focused on the research on medical field and specialized in molecular biology and biotechnology. Research that was conducted at the time of the excursion was Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) analysis and its connection with the prevalence of microbe-caused disease, such as dengue virus. Samples used in the research were collected from Singapore’s neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia
Bioinformatics Institute is an institute that is focusing its work on the field of bioinformatics, biological computations, and chemical computations. The goal of the work is to engineer drugs based on bioinformatics data and to simulate the drug trials in computer so the research cost can be reduced. Unlike the Genome Institute that analyze a disease using genetic science as a basis. The Bioinformatics Institute analyze disease using a much broader analysis that is based on biological science, chemical science, and IT.
Tan Tock Seng Hospital
This hospital is one of the three hospitals in Singapore with the most advance laboratories. TTSH is a hospital that is built to help financially challenged people. And after a hundred years of its founding, the hospital proves that its facilities and service are not inferior to the hospitals built for middle or upper-classmen. One of the technology that makes TTSH a leading hospital is the automation of the laboratories; blood sample from patients are bar-coded so the machine in the lab will direct the sample to the tests ordered. Although most tests are conducted using automated machines, manual checking using microscope is still done to guarantee the accuracy of the tests. TTSH also has a specialized lab to analyze blood sample from HIV/AIDS patients using computerized analysis
Yakult Pte. Ltd.
The Yakult factory in Singapore is not only bigger than the one in Indonesia, its production process has also been standardized so that the production process is identical to the one in Japan. The production of Yakult is similar to the production of traditional yogurt. The differences are, in the Yakult production, the environmental factor in the production process is more controlled and the production is done in much bigger scale. The starter of Yakult is prepared and inoculated to the milk and the mixture is then incubated for a period of time. After that, the Yakult is packaged in the bottles molded by compressors. Once the packaging is finished, quality control process will be conducted to ensure the safety and quality of the product.
Mushrooms, known as cholesterol-free food, have two selling points; the mushroom itself can be sold as food products and the farm can also be marketed as tourists’ attraction. Mycofarm is a mushroom farm that utilizes both selling points. In Mycofarm, visitors can learn to cultivate mushrooms in conditions that are optimum for their growth, such as the optimum temperature, moisture, and media composition. Visitors can also taste mushroom-based delicacies that are cooked by the owner of the farm, buy fresh mushrooms and or dried products.
Department of Microbiology, National University of Singapore
NUS has Department of Microbiology in its Faculty of Medicine. This university doesn’t have microbiology undergraduate program. Most of the microbiology labs are reserved for graduate students to conduct their research. Graduate students conducting research in microbiology lab get table inside the lab to conduct their research. The strong point of the microbiology department is that the work places are separated according to the substance that are used in the work place so that contamination can be minimized. The inoculation process is also conducted inside different laminar airflows according to the type of the bacteria .
School of Biological Science, Nanyang Technological University
The school is focused on the field of genetics and molecular biology and the sub-programs are directed to the field of biotechnology. The lab facilities are very sufficient. For example, micropipettes and reagents are available in numerous amount so that every table in the lab has its own micropipettes and set of reagents. The lab is also equipped with advanced security system so that only authorized people can go inside.
JTC Learning Journey
JTC Corporation is government facility whose task is to develop Jurong area to become a center of industry. JTC Corporation is founded in 60s. At first, JTC worked on the production of textiles and beverages and in 2000s, JTC developed a biotechnology-based industry and built Biopolis. JTC’s role in industrial development in Singapore is as the planner and contractor in industrial areas. JTC becomes vital in Singapore’s economy. As a country with limited natural resources, Singapore needs astounding industrial managements to make the country’s economy stable.
NEWater gives tour to its visitors to help them understanding the process of water treatment in Singapore. NEWater processes water from different sources across Singapore so the water can be safely consumed by the country’s residents. NEWater uses reverse osmosis technology and UV radiation to sterilize the water. NEWater is a government facility that prioritizes the quality and safety of the water produced. The equipments used in the facility is checked and changed regularly every 5 years, an excellent example that should be followed by the water treatment facilities in Indonesia such as IPAL and PDAM.
