Summer Research Program 2018 by The university of Tsukuba, Japan

[:id]Hello my name is Latifatul Azizah and now I am currently enrolled as a 4^th year microbiology student in SITH ITB. Here I want to share my experience in the last summer as a participant in Summer Research Program 2018 by The university of Tsukuba, Japan. The program was offered by University of Tsukuba annually and 2018 was the 9^th SRP.  The program took place in Tsukuba for 2 weeks consisting series of laboratory works, several seminars, and weekend cultural activity. I managed to find some extra trip too beside the program itinerary.

In this program, I was given the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of research in University of Tsukuba in one of the participating laboratories, mine was Molecular Plant Pathology with Dr. Yasuhiro Ishiga (Ishiga Sensei) as the supervisor. The main project of this laboratory at that time was about investigating new emerging cabbage disease in Nagano prefecture, Japan. As a research student, Sensei gave me the opportunity to conduct little part of the whole research. The aim of the work was to find out the major virulence factor of the pathogen attacking cabbage crops in the molecular level. I learned some new laboratory practical skills.

All program fees including tuition fee and accommodation is provided by University of Tsukuba and JASSO scholarship, and some qualified participants also provided with round-trip travel expenses, so We do not have to worry.

Not only research but I also had experience living in Japan with its super neat, clean, and structured environment plus the bonus of extra polite citizen. The working pace also got a little bit faster and I had to adjust myself. The foods were the best thing that ever happened to me during my stay, I got 3 kgs!  In the weekend, it was planned for us to hike Mount Tsukuba at the first time but then, there came a Typhoon so the trip was cancelled and we were going to Tokyo in the next day and fortunately because of the Typhoon, the Hanabi (fireworks festival) that actually going to happen the day before was postponed to the next day so We can enjoy the Hanabi festival. So lucky because the festival is one of Japanese annual festival.

Research program abroad provides a great grounding in which to further experience divergent cultures and exchange knowledge. It has been an eventful summer and certainly one to remember.
