Internship Course : Building Competency by Application of Microbiology

How is science of microbiology applied in real life? This question may be one of questions asked by every Microbiology Undergraduate Program students. Although students have been given microbiological knowledge on a regular basis, both pure and applied, deeper understanding would only be acquired when students experience it in the real life. In order to give that deeper understanding and prepare its students, Microbiology Undergraduate Program in ITB requires its students to apply for internship. Internship in the microbiology major is a course taken in 6th semester, where in this course students are encouraged to apply as intern in companies or other institutions.

As a science, Microbiology is a vast knowledge. In last decades, science of microbiology has been developed rapidly. This development doesn’t only happen in pure microbiology science, but also the development of new branch of applied science as a collaboration between Microbiology and other sciences. Therefore, Microbiology Undergraduate Program is a program with broad prospects. These prospects then represented in a variety of choices for application of internship. In this article, companies and institutions commonly chosen by the students will be reviewed.


Food and Pharmaceuticals

In food and pharmaceutical industry, role of microbiology is diverse, starts from pre to post production. In the production phase, microbiology is needed to control production processes that involve microbes such as fermented food and beverage. Control during production is needed in order to ensure that production meets the standard, so the product will possess constant quality and character.

After production, a microbiologist is needed to assure or control quality of the product. Quality control or assurance is important to assure that products in the hand of customers are the best product that meets the standard. Therefore, the product will be deemed safe to be consumed. Microbiology itself has a role in quality assurance through techniques to enumerate number of microbes in a product and to identify microbes contained in the product.

Besides involved in quality assurance by producers, microbiology is also needed by government to supervise the safety of food and pharmaceuticals. In order to perform the supervision, food and pharmaceuticals are examined before and after circulated in the market. This examination is done in order to ensure that the product meets the given standards.


  • Rumah Tempe Indonesia Sleman

Rumah Tempe Indonesia is a hygienic Indonesian tempeh producer. Production process in this small industry has pocketed SNI standard, and approved by BPOM, MUI, Dinkes, etc. The first branch is established in Bogor, under the Koperasi Pengrajin Tahu Tempe (lit: Union of Tofu and Tempe Craftsmen). To date, biggest branch is located in Bogor and is able to export frozen tempe. Other branches beside Bogor and Sleman are Gunungkidul and few other brances.

As one of developing business, Microbiology student’s contribution is needed in standardization of production process and quality assurance of produced tempeh. Because of the simple equipment given, students are demanded to be creative in working, using principles of microbiology while adjusting with real conditions.

  • PT Jamu Air Mancur

Air Mancur is one of the biggest herbal medicine producer in Indonesia. Reputation of this company isn’t only acknowledged nationally, but also internationally. Products of this company has been exported to various country including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Taiwan, Hongkong, even Middle Eastern and Afrika.

Key of success in PT Jamu Air Mancur is quality improvement by preserving effectivity and safety of the product. Few basics applied are standardization of production in reference to CPOTB (Cara Pembuatan Obat Tradisional yang Baik, lit: Ways of Making Good Traditional Medicine) given by Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia and other valid standards and establishment of pharmacology, pharmacognosy & phytochemistry, microbiology, analytic, and fabrication laboratorium.   • Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM)

Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (lit: Board of Medicine and Food Supervisor) is an instution in Indonesia in charge of overseeing circulation of medicines and food. The function of this institution is similar to that of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in United States.

Included in this institution if Laboratorium of Microbiology. In this laboratoium, various examinations are performed to determine microbes in food, cosmetic, and medicines. This laboratorium has been accredited by Komite Akreditasi Nasional Badan Standarisasi Nasional (lit: National Committee of Accreditation National Body of Standardization) and has been certified for the quality of examination results.

World of medical can’t be separated from microbiology. Several microorganisms are known as pathogens, whether it’s bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc. In diagnostic, knowledge of microorganism is needed to identify pathogenic agents and determine needed treatment for the patients. Even farther, science of microbiology is needed in various medical research to study the transmission of disease and evaluate the effectivity of given treatment to combat microorganisms.   • Eijkman Molecular Institute

Eijkman Molecular Institute is located on Diponegoro St. No. 69 Central Jakarta 10430. This institution is positioned in the vicinity of Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital. Eijkman Molecular Institute is a nonprofit research institution financed by government of Republic of Indonesia to conduct research in molecular biology and biotechnology.

In research, Eijkman Molecular Institute focuses itself in fundamental moleculat biology in Indonesia related to biomedical, biodiversity, biotechnology, and biological safety. In education, Eijkman Molecular Institute provides joint-supervision for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students. This is based on one of the aim of this institute which is providing training for graduates and increasing the competency of medical biotechnology in Indonesia.

In Eijkman Molecular Institute, there are several research units such as Laboratorium of Bacteriology, Laboratorium of Dengue, Laboratorium of Hepatitis, Laboratorium of Malaria, Emerging Virus Research Unit, etc. Skills of Microbiology can be applied in various research units, particularly Laboratorium of Bacterology, which mainly researches about bacterial infection such as Streptococcus pneumoniae.

  • Medical Microbiology Department (Mikro-UI)

Medical Microbiology Department is a part of Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia that is responsible for education, research, and public service in microbiology. Microbiology Department provides education in microbiology for undergraduates, graduates, biomedical students with specialty in microbiology, and clinical microbiology specialists. All clinical, biomedical, and epidemiological researches are conducted by Microbiology Department in collaboration with other institutions. Microbiology Department provides services in form of clinical microbiology examinations in Clinical Microbiology Laboratory to support infectious disease diagnosis. The laboratory itself has several laboratory to examine clinical specimen, which is Tuberculosis Laboratory, Bacteriology Laboratory, Mycology Laboratory, also Virology and Molecular Laboratory. Because it is highly relatedness with science of microbiology, students of Microbiology Undergraduate Program can study all things about clinical microbiology.

  • PT Bio Farma (Persero)

PT Bio Farma (Persero) is a government-owned company located in Bandung, West Java, which produces vaccine and sera to support immunization program in Indonesia and other countries. Bio Farma is the only producer of vaccine for human in Indonesia and is the biggest yet in Southeast Asian which has been dedicating itself in producing international quality vaccine and antisera.

Divisions related to microbiology are Quality Control and Research and Development. In quality control, microbiology is needed to ensure that products of PT Bio Farma has consistent quality, starts from raw material, intermediate products, and end products. Indonesia as a maritime country lies its strength in vast area of waters, thus making marine and fishery commodity as one of main products of Indonesia. Microbiology as an applicative science can contribute to development of this field. By application of microbiology, it is expected that quality of aquaculture product would be increased. The increase in quality by application of microbiology can be achieved from several aspects, such as in monitoring microbial quality of cultivation water or using technology to prevent diseases caused by microorganisms.


  • Balai Besar Penelitian dan Pengembangan Budidaya Laut (BBPPBL) Gondol

BBPPBL Gondol, Bali is one of the research institutions under Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Indonesia. BBPPBL has a role in cultivating important commodity marine fishes, particularly in regards to hatchery and enlargement. Researches done by BBPPBL Gondol are focused in development of aquaculture technology, such as marine fishes, crustaceae, and shellfish hatchery; and also enlargement of marine fishes. There are some researches that support the development of the technology such as researches in pathology, nutrition, biotechnology, biology, also health and environment of cultivation.

Among several laboratory and research units under BBPPBL Gondol, microbiology students commonly involved in Laboratory of Pathology and Laboratory of Biotechnology. Laboratory of Pathology is a laboratory that focuses in diseases that attacks fishes. The knowledge of microbiology is needed in laboratory in regards to disease assessment, isolation of pathogen microbes, and production of fish vaccine. Different from Laboratory of Pathology, Biotechnology Laboratory focuses on application of biotechnology to enhance the quality of aquaculture products. Microbiology can contribute as there’s interaction between microorganisms and aquatic animals, therefore researches in order to study and manipulate the interaction is one of the potential technology to be developed.

  • PT Jangari Perdana

Jangari Perdana Company is established in 1999 by H. Endang Nurikhwan, B.Ac. PT Jangari Perdana is a company that is moving in field of fisheries, particularly feed. This company has been a distributor of feed fisheries in areas of Cirata Reservoir, which encloses three districts of Cianjur, Bandung, and Purwakarta. The feed is produced by PT Sinta Prima Feedmill. Besides focusing in feed for fisheries, this company also cultivates freshwater fishes, including hatchery. Fishes that are cultivated are goldfish, carps, parrot fish, and pomfret.

One of the research done by this company is optimization of mass production of organisms as living feedstock, such as Moina sp. This company is still developing, therefore students get the opportunity to acquire experience and new knowledge that isn’t given during classes.

Energy sector is main sector in the life of human. This sector is one of the main supporters and developers in economy. Whether realized or not, microbiology has a stake in sector of energy. Application of microbiology in sector of energy is quite broad, starts from unrenewable energy to renewable energy. In unrenewable energy, mainly oil and gas industry, microbiology contribute technology in form of remediation of environments tainted by oil drilling and production and also increase of production by Microbially Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR). In the sector of renewable energy, one of the contributions of microbiology is the development of microbe such as microalgae to produce raw material needed to make ethanol. So far, internship done by microbiology students focuses in unrenewable energy.


  • PT Pertamina RU IV Cilacap

PT Pertamina RU (Refinery Unit) IV Cilacap is one of seven processing unit which has the highest production capacity of 348,000 barrels/day with the broadest types of products. This refinery holds strategic value as it supplies 34% of oil and gas national demand and 60% of oil and gas demand in Java Island. This refinery is the only refinery in Indonesia that produces asphalt and base oil to support the development of infrastructure in Indonesia. In the operation, PT Pertamina RU IV Cilacap has several supporting units, including Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). Division of HSE provides facilities and infrastructures regarding to supporting aspects in supervising work safety and environmental protection.

The section of environment in HSE is in charge of coordinating, supervising, and leading operational activities which comprised of monitoring/management of environment, B3, housekeeping, and gardening/greening to achieve a clean, safe, comfortable working environment and also to minimize the environmental impact of oil refinery operation. One of the applications of microbiology in HSE is waste management by microbial means. Microbial waste management is a potential that needs to be optimized, as knowledge regarding microbiology is still limited.

  • Chevron Indonesia Company (CiCo)

Chevron is partner in economy of Indonesia and has been a part of community for more than 80 years. This company is the biggest producer of raw material in Indonesia, which contributes about 40% of national production. The biggest step of Chevron in exploration and production of energy of Indonesia started in 1924, when Standard Oil Company of California (Socal), now Chevron, sends geological expedition to Sumatera Island. Since then, for more than half a century, Chevron has been the largest raw oil and geothermal producer in Indonesia.

While interning here, students are not only given the chance to apply the knowledge of microbiology that they have, but also given new knowledge regarding to oil and gas production from offshore well. Application of microbiology is needed regarding oil waste management in bioremediation of facility that is owned by Chevron. Knowledge of microbiology is important to monitor the activity of microorganisms that degrades oil in the waste.

Microbes exist ubiquitously in environment, starts from open environment such as forest to closed environment such as hospital. The existence and abundance of particular microbe in environment is one of the indicator of environmental condition. Laboratorium Pengendalian Kualitas Lingkungan (LPKL) (lit: Laboratory of Environmental Quality Control) is one public laboratory built in 2003, in form of business unit under PDAM Tirtawening company. This laboratory is an environmental laboratory that focuses in environmental quality monitoring and environmental health audit.

 Scope of service provided by this laboratory starts from consultation about implementation of water and air quality monitoring plan and also environmental health audit to consultation regarding the result of examination and solutions to improve environmental conditions, whether for individuals, private and state owned companies, also government.   • Balai Konservasi Borobudur (BKB)

Balai Konservasi Borobudur (BKB) (lit: Borobudur Conservation Hall) is established in 1991 primarily to handle newly restored Borobudur Temple that needed to be maintained, observed, and researched. This institution is a technical implementation unit Ministry of Education and Culture in conservation and preservation of Borobudur Temple which is responsible to Director General of Culture. BKB Borobudur has chemistry, microbiology, phsysics/petrography, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and field laboratory. The existence of these laboratories are needed in order to develop various conservation methods and conservation studies of Borobudur Temple and other historical items in Indonesia and Southeast Asia which is made of stone, bricks, and wood.

The role of microbiology is needed in conservation process of historical items such as Borobudur Temple. The existence of biodeterioration process by microorganisms living in the stone drives the need of microbiology students to study those microorganisms and applying the acquired knowledge in order to conserve the historical place.

  • Balai Teknologi Lingkungan (BTL)-BPPT

Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT) (lit: Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology) is non-ministry governmental institution under the coordination of Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education which is assigned to perform governmental tasks in assessment and application of technology. BTL is a part of BPPT which focuses in research pertaining to environment. Researches in BTL involve biology and microbiology, some of them are medium optimization, phytoremediation, Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, microalga, etc.

The understanding of microbiology is needed in research about environmental technology. As a science, objects in microbiology such as mycorrhiza and microalga has been known to take a role in environment. Application of microbiology can enrich technology by utilizing microorganism to fulfill demand, such as the development of biofertilizer from a particular microbe isolate.

In daily life, human has necessity for material to build various things. Materials needed as building blocks are various, starts from natural material such as wood to synthetic such as plastic. Each material has different characteristic, therefore the usage is different. One of the similarity between those materials are they are able to deteriorate whether during production or during storage of final product. This deterioration process can happen because material is exposed to specific agent, including microorganism. Because deterioration can decrease the quality of a product, the mastery of microbiology as tools to control material production is highly needed.

Wood itself as a raw material is a living habitat for several organisms, including fungi. The growth of organisms can negatively affect the quality of wood material. The application of microbiology can help production process by identifying microorganisms living in the wood, so that needed treatment can be taken to control the growth of unwanted microorganisms.

This company that is located in Padalarang is a company that is focused in timber industry. Main product of this company is wooden slat, which is wood with certain characteristic and dimension as raw material of wooden pencil. Most of the products of this company has been distributed in countries of Asia and Europe. To date, this country can produce six million of raw slat and five million of raw pencil annually by order. This company also supports the sustainability of world forest, where they have pocketed the certification of Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) and certification of Chain of Custody from FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council).

As timber industry in common, the main problem from wooden products are the existence of indigenous organisms, such as indigenous fungi in the raw material. The existence of indigenous fungi can encourage the existence of organism in the final product. This product then can be deemed imperfect and customer would reject this product, causing loss to the company. Fungi itself is an object of microbiology, therefore application of microbiology to control the growth of such unwanted organism would be a promising solution. Furtherly, science of microbiology is also needed in development of good and environmentally friendly fungicide technology to maintain plantations of this company.

Agriculture and Forestry

Agriculture and forestry is one of the biggest industry in Indonesia. As agrarian country, Indonesia holds treasure in form agriculture and forestry resources. Due to the significance of this industry, Indonesia always attempts to innovate in order to increase the quality of the product and improve production process. Microbiology offers this innovation. This is due to the fact that microorganism and plant have tight interaction, whether benefitting or harmful. Furthermore, microorganism has unique ability to live in various habitat due to its unique enzymatic property, making it an interesting potential to be developed.

  • Balai Penelitian Tanaman Sayuran (BALITSA)

Balai Penelitian Tanaman Sayuran (BALITSA) (lit: Research Center for Vegetable Crops) is one of the technical implementation unit of  Agency for Agricultural Research and Development under the Center for Horticultural Research and Development. This institution is established in 1940 in Bogor not with the name of Balitsa, then it is inaugurated in 1995 in Cikole (Lembang). The products of Balitsa are laboratory examination result papers and vegetable seed. Although researches done here is still conventional, knowledges owned by Balitsa researches regarding agriculture and farming is vast.

As someone who understands microbiology, microbiology students can contribute in phytopathology. In phytopathology, microbiology is applied to identify pathogenic microorganism that causes disease in plant. Identification of microorganism is important as diseases cause loss in farming. By identifying pathogens, it is expected that people can determine the treatment needed to be applied.

To Indonesia which is an agrarian country, other important industry beside agriculture and forestry is petrochemical industry. Fertilizer, as one of the product from this industry is needed by the farmers to support nutritional demand of crops. Several microorganisms, such as bacteria or mycorrhizae, can positively associate with crops. Association between microorganism and plant can be used to develop innovation in form of biofertilizer. In the development of this environmentally friendly fertilizer, microbiology is needed to optimize the growth of microorganism, so that the result will meet the expectation.


  • PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja (PUSRI)

PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang is subsidiary of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) which is a state owned company. PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang runs business in fertilizer production and marketing. The company which famously known as PT PUSTRI is started with the establishment of Perusahaan Pupuk on 24th December 1959, is the first producer of urea fertilizer in Indonesia. Beside producing and marketing fertilizers, PUSRI also conducts research and development, training and education, technical designing, bagging station, construction, management, factory operation, repair, and maintenance.

Microbiology contributes in research and development. Microorganism is often being a research object to develop biofertilizer. Microbiology student is needed to help this development, for example to evaluate the potential of an isolate to be developed as a biofertilizer. Microbiology is also used to optimize the production condition of the biofertilizer.

PT Pupuk Kujang is a state owned company producing fertilizers. With few other fertilizer producing companies, they are subsidiaries of PT Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company. Products of this company is urea fertilizer and organic fertilizer, which utilizes biological agents such as microorganisms. Pupuk Kujang caters fertilizer supply in West Java province.

Science of microbiology is needed in Research and Development Department and Ecological Department in liquid waste management section. One of the task done by the research laboratory in this company is development of pesticides, cow feed, etc. Regarding to waste treatment, the development of microorganisms that is able to degrade waste is highly needed as a solution for environmentally friendly waste treatment.
