Human have predicted the existence of microorganism long before Robert Hooke observed fruiting body of mould in 1666. However, microbiology just begun to develop in 19th century credited to the works of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. In 21st century, the field experienced enormous development with the emergence of its branches. Unfortunately, many Indonesian are not accustomed with this field of science. In order to familiarize microbiology to community, especially high school students and teachers, Fermenstation 2017 presented Operon, a national scale microbiology competition. This competition was held in 9-23 September 2017 and attracted high school students from various part of Indonesia. At least 74 teams from Sumatera to Sulawesi registered in this first national scale Microbiology competition.

The competition Operon was consisted of two rounds, elimination and final round. Elimination round was conducted through the Microbiology Student Union “Archaea” website, where registered teams have to complete online testing platform which is developed together with students from Informatics Study Program. At this stage, more than 70 teams from various provinces of Indonesia, such as West Nusa Tenggara, South Sumatera, Lampung, Southeast Sulawesi, Bali and various parts in Java, tried their bests to be on the top 15 that will go to the final round.

The 15 teams that made it into the final were invited to come to ITB campus in Bandung. They were challenged to present their ideas in developing microbial-based product using local resources. Many interesting ideas were submitted, such as genetic engineering to optimize Tempeh or durian-based Nata. The teams presented their ideas in front of juries from Microbiology Study Program (Dr. Pingkan Aditiawati, MS; Intan Taufik, S.Si, M.Si; Dr. Gede Suantika, S.Si, M.Si; Dr. Dea Indriani Astuti, S.Si; and Ir. V Sri Harjati Suhardi, Ph.D) and from School of Business and Management ITB, Yulianto Suharto, APT, MBA, MSc. Besides competing the teams were also given workshops on basic microbiology works and tour to the labs in SITH ITB. At the end of final round, prizes were awarded to SMA Marsudirini Bogor (1st Winner), SMANU MH Thamrin Jakarta (2nd Winner), and SMA Semesta Semarang (3rd Winner).[:]
